 Karolína Kurková: From Czech Roots to Global Supermodel

Early Life and Discovery

Karolína Kurková was born on 28 February 1984 in Děčín, then part of Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). She is the daughter of Josef Kurka, a Czech basketball player, and a Slovak mother. As a teenager, Karolína was notably tall and athletic, which led to teasing during her school years. At the age of 15, a friend sent her photographs to a modeling agency in Prague without her knowledge. This initiative led to her signing with the agency and marked the beginning of her modeling career. ​

Rise to Supermodel Status

Karolína's early modeling work in Prague quickly garnered attention, prompting her move to Milan, Italy. There, she met fashion designer Miuccia Prada, who offered her a contract, significantly boosting her career. In 1999, she relocated to New York City, and by February 2001, at just 17 years old, she graced the cover of American Vogue, becoming one of the youngest models to do so. ​

Her distinctive features and commanding presence led to collaborations with top fashion houses, including Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Chanel, Tommy Hilfiger, and Yves Saint Laurent. In 2002, she was honored as "Model of the Year" at the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards. 

Victoria's Secret and Mainstream Fame

Karolína's association with Victoria's Secret began in 2000, and she became an official Victoria's Secret Angel from 2005 to 2008. She was known for her dynamic runway presence and was chosen to wear the "Star of Victoria Fantasy Bra" in 2002, valued at $10 million. In 2006, she wore the "Hearts On Fire" Fantasy Bra, worth $6.5 million. ​

Her popularity extended beyond the runway; in 2004, People magazine named her one of the "50 Most Beautiful People." ​

Acting and Television Appearances

Expanding her career into acting, Karolína appeared in the 2009 film "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" as Courtney A. Krieger, also known as Cover Girl. She also made guest appearances on television series such as "Chuck," "30 Rock," and "Person of Interest." ​

In 2013, she served as a mentor on the reality TV show "The Face," alongside Naomi Campbell and Coco Rocha, where she coached aspiring models. ​

Personal Life and Philanthropy

Karolína married film producer Archie Drury in 2009. The couple has three children: sons Tobin Jack, born in 2009, and Noah Lee, born in 2015, and daughter LunaGrace, born in 2021.
